This map reflects an immediate real-time image of the planet- showing where it's night and where it's day at the moment the image was taken.

This picture shows the solar terminator.

A solar terminator (in astronomy terms) is the border between day and night upon the surface of a planetary body. So any surface that is right under the border experiences twilight (whether it'd be dawn or dusk).

It is currently spring in the southern hemisphere - autumn in the northern hemisphere.

The only maps showing the terminator were in the mercator map projection (when the global map is stretched out mostly at the poles). So I used my intelligent guessing on how to shape the night region.

What I did was take my Daytime map and pasted it over my Nighttime map as another layer. I then made a vector layer to use lines to outline the night region. Then on the daytime layer I erased everything within the night region so the nighttime map shows up under the erased section.

So yeah, it was the daytime map was the hardest work, form there this map and the nighttime map were as easy as making a few measurments and adjustments to the original daytime map.
